1989/1990 - No more Reagan or Thatcher. Communist ideas, like Japanese knot weed, are only held back by constant vigilance. Relax your guard and the weed springs back.
The significance of 'culture wars' was not grasped by post Reagan and Thatcher politicians and the weed was allowed to spread from universities to schools and, as students graduated, into most of our institutions. Beating it back is going to be one hell of a job.
They are beginning to realize that cultural Marxism is a dead end. Their utopia of an egalitarian society cannot be built by abandoning material struggles like wages, rents, and the distribution of wealth in favor of social policies centered on race, gender, and sexual orientation.
They were misled by the academic left, which had itself been shaped by institutions and cultural organizations funded by American capitalist interests, including CIA front organizations such as the Congress for Cultural Freedom.
If your response to growing acceptance of socialist and communist thought is to put forward Reagan and Thatcher then you've lost the battle. Those two marked the end of the New Deal consensus wherein constrained capitalism and socialistic government programs raised living standards for all. Selling off public assets, removing regulations, and putting greed front and center are responsible for the current malaise. Exploding inequality is what has led to the bad reputation capitalism enjoys. If you want to keep the current system then do something about the rist in power of billioinaires and trillionaires. The critique is accurate. Unrestrained capitalism is ruining the United States. Politicians like Sanders, Mamdani, and Cortez get this. The status quo is unsustainable.
PEOPLE want something, usually from somebody else for nothing. They cheer those leaders that make this promise but there is nothing to give if the barrel is empty. Rome started over taxing the rich, then when the rich have nothing more to give, the countries people then turned on each other. Citizenship was offered to all so that these newcomers could be taxed. Except they only came for the bread and circus and had nothing to give. Multiculturalism is a ponzi scheme that ends in disaster for the country that believed it to be a saviour. Communism, Capitalism, socialism never work because they are only interested in want it will make for those pushing it. That is why they hated Hitler, he gave to the people work, fair pay and a real equality in their countries future.

Great piece. That’s the rub: if capitalism fails enough people, then they will inevitably turn to something else.
20th century communism is rightly criticized for the horrors it caused, but too often demonized by the uneducated on the topic.
I fully believe that taking the successful pieces of economic systems is what’s necessary. A buffet style.
3% of this works, and 5% of that works. Take it and leave the rest.
How could that be built?
