I used to teach business at university level, and at one point I was teaching leadership to masters students. As part of my class on charismatic leadership I used to give students a scenario of a country after losing a disasterous war. It was Weimar Germany, but I didn't tell them that. Then we talked about the election candidates for the 5th March, 1933 presidential election. The dour older aristocrat who stood for going back to the old world or the brash, young, charismatic forward thinker? Both offerring a better, different world. At the end of the class they "vote" by moving to one side of the room or the other.

And every single term, every single student, in every single class is stunned to silence when I tell them. "Congratulations! You've just elected Adolf Hitler."

Mìodrag Kojadínović (鄺·妙讜)'s avatar

When elected, the real Adolf Hitler, not the school exercise simulacrum you were conducting, had not yet carried out the murder of the disabled and gay men in Germany, let alone the Holocaust of Jews and mass murder of Soviet war prisoners and murder of people all over Europe including my mum's father, killed when he was almost three times younger than I am today.

At the time he was elected, Hitler was just a liar, like 99% politicians the world over. His madness came to the fore later.

So bear that in mind when you accuse your students of purportedly colluding with a deranged mass murderer.

by Pamela Watson's avatar

Please do not put words in my mouth! I did not say that and that was not my intention. My point is simply that he was voted in by ordinary people like them. And THAT is the point.

Will Liley's avatar

Well, Pamela, all I can conclude is that you (innocently or deliberately) didn’t mention the context: that “Hitler” in fact didn’t win a majority but was installed in office only with the reluctant assent of the old moustachioed alternative, that “Hitler” had never revealed his true agenda (though he was always overt about his antisemitism and his advocacy of force) - that he wanted absolute power; that within weeks of gaining office he concocted an event (the Reichstag fire) that enabled him to demand and get that absolute authority; that within weeks after that he had opened his first concentration camp (Dachau) which as a practical matter must have been in his plans long before. Your classroom exercise was clever and cute, but you rigged the choice - you should have provided the students with context because in real life there always is.

Helen Grace Sidhe's avatar

Such exercises always break down eventually. The point is to teach and encourage students to interrogate further

Ernie Boxall's avatar

Hitler isn't the only example of *great orators is he. In our lifetime Castro, Chavez, Maduro, Blair, Clinton, Sanders and Obama...amd Mamdany...Wow! All communists/socialists and globalist "wannabe" dictators.

Daniel Howard James's avatar

You forgot that Hitler had already been imprisoned after trying to sieze power in a coup. His views were well known in Germany and abroad by the 1920s, let alone the 1930s.

Daniel Howard James's avatar

Pamela's exercise was about the choice of election candidates, not what happened afterwards.

Mìodrag Kojadínović (鄺·妙讜)'s avatar

Do not get paranoically defensive, I never put any words into your mouth.

I simply said the silly game you organised in your classroom is completely faulty as it proves nothing, to wit: it has nothing to do with Germans choosing a foreigner, Austrian Hitler, because they did not know what Hitler was going to become AFTER he was elected.

So they chose one lying politician over another, thinking he would stay in power for a time, not suspend most laws -- no one had that in mind when electing him.

So nothing wrong with them choosing him, thinking he was a lesser evil. And everything wrong with your faux-parallel, based on your own preselection of what you present to your students about the two options, to make them decide by nudging them to make a mistake you can then gloat over by challenging it.

agoramania's avatar

Isn't that the point of that little social experiments? Students just like the original voters didn't know what kind of man they were voting for.

From liberal, left wing teachers, to democrat politicians and parents, the lie that PRESIDENT TRUMP is Hitler is being spread...when the truth is that PRESIDENT TRUMP is CHURCHILL, warning the people about the corruption of the country.

The answer? (a) There is no answer because people follow patterns. (b) The answer would be for parents to take more interest in their children's education.

(c) But they wont because people follow patterns.

Hitler had his manifesto "Mein Kampf". Everything that happened was foretold in that book. Those people who had read Mein Kampf headed for the exits in 1933. People knew who they had voted for.

Mìodrag Kojadínović (鄺·妙讜)'s avatar

Meh... that's a preposterous and -- honestly -- silly claim you make.

People vote. It takes 1.5-2 seconds to mark the person you vote for and up to 40 minutes waiting to do so, if the queue is very long. Certainly not more than 5% had read the obscure "Mein Kampf" before they voted.

James Doyle's avatar

Most people didn't read Mein Kampf but to say Hitler's beliefs were a secret is wrong. That is why I said those that had read the book or knew what the book said left.

What an excellent exercise. It demonstrates just how ineffective the mob is at vetting candidates with the current method. AND the people voting did not just have their options culled by the night of the long knives. And the people voting were educated, not average joes. This is a brilliant tool and it should be used in every high-school before children are allowed to vote. THANK YOU for teaching in this way. You are a great teacher who has made a difference. I wish i had such a teacher.

Thank you! Many on this thread completely misunderstood the point I was making. I've been accused of being everything from a fascist to a communist! I didn't trick anybody. They were educated adults, mostly professionals in their 30s, and it was a masters course. They were given the facts. You entirely miss the point, just as they did. Hitler offerred the progressive option and he was a charismatic leader. They voted for him overwhelmingly because he offerred them what they wanted to hear and he came across well. That is exactly how charlatans work.

The NSDAP gained power by agreeing to a coalition with right-wing parties. The Communists refused to join the Social Democrats in a coalition - Stalin forbade it. The USSR provided most of the funding for the KPD. That is how the Nazi's were able to gain power. This was mostly about economics - the cultural rot as some would call it was mostly confined to Berlin. The NSDAP never got more that 35% or of the national vote. A large majority of German voters rejected them.

by Pamela Watson's avatar

UK’s current govt got around 30% of the vote on a low turn out, so only represented about 20%.

NSDAP were nicknamed “Nazi” by the KSD I thought? It’s a nasty joke suggesting they were country bumpkins.

GG's avatar

I suspect the UK will have some interesting coalitions in the near future. I don’t follow their politics very much. France is going to be interesting as well. We won’t see any Ignat Sozi party come to power though. That was a onetime thing.

GG's avatar

I think the author of that article focused too much on the cultural issues and not enough on the economic stuff. I also wonder about conditions in Berlin v the rest of Germany. San Francisco is a lot different from the rest of the country. I think that might be a good comparison to make.

GG's avatar

The name Nazi is a slang term. They combined Ignatius and Sozi.

Ignatius is a name but also a slang term for country bumkins. Sozi is slang for Socialist. Ignat Sozi = Nazi. Goerbels tried to own it, but he could never make that work. They always called themselves National Socialists. I’m not sure if the term was invented by the KPD or the SPD. Maybe both - I don’t know the origin of it.

Disobedient Threads's avatar

Pamela, saying “I taught the Holocaust” does not make this safer. It makes it more disturbing.

Because what you are defending here is not Holocaust education. It is the Nazi causal myth: that Weimar was destroyed by “degeneracy,” queer life, feminism, Jewish intellectuals, artists, and sex reform and that fascism emerged as some understandable reaction to cultural rot.

That's not nuance, but rather fascist propaganda with teacher credentials.

The people this article blames were not the cause of Nazism. Many were among its first targets. Hirschfeld’s Institute was looted and burned. Queer people were persecuted. Jewish intellectuals were driven out or murdered. Artists were censored. Women were forced back into reproductive obedience.

When you teach that those people “bred the Reich,” you are not explaining fascism.

You are teaching students to think like fascists before telling them fascism was bad.

You don’t think I did what? A bit like the policeman who didn’t think Henry Nowak had been stabbed? I was pointing out that without 100% knowledge people make different choices than if they had known everything. And that humans prefer charisma to morals. Because they are human. How does either of those things make me a Nazi?

AnimalMotherAFNMFH's avatar

Nothing elected Adolf Hitler except the REAL and PRESENT existential threat of being overrun by Communists and liquidated. That's it. EVERYTHING in 1933 was in dialectic with the Communist revolution of 1917. Literally every last fucking thing.

by Pamela Watson's avatar

Hitler offerred enough of the “nice” things of the left without the excesses of Weimar. It was more to do with being the end result of a century of pushing towards a German nation-state than any reaction to what was happening in Russia. Don’t get me wrong, I do not support him in the slightest, but you are looking at things from the viewpoint of 21st century, not Germans in 1933. Many saw the Nazis as the “least worst” alternative, but at least modern and better than a failed monarchy.

Stout Yeoman's avatar

Another enlightening tour de force from Celina. The concluding paragraphs succintly sum up where we are, but the form of the backlash, the leviathan that gets summoned, is unlikely to be a political party akin to Germany's National Socialists. It will be Islam on current demographic projections and a take over by barbarians already inside the gates, not an emergence from among First Nation Brits.

A multi-cultural society of growing groups of mutual antipathy, our current condition, is not one a poltical party can use in the way Germany's National Socialists did. Who wears the jackboot forever on the human face may not be the quite the same totalitarians Orwell feared, and the preconditions that now obtain may entail the low level civil disorder described by Prof David Betz for which history may be less of a guide.

Also, unlike Weimar Germany, our internal divisions and parallel societies have international support. If Islam in the UK is threatened it will be suported by Qatar, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan at first poltically but eventually by arms brought through our porous border. Other Euroean countries absorbed by their own problems and equally exhausted will not be available to help. What may matter is the state of the US come the day when the only salvation would be to become the 51st state, but whether they want to add to the problems of their own polarised society remains to be seen.

We the First Nation British need to act very soon. As Neeva Parvini describes in "The Populist Delusion" a (counter) revolution needs a political elite. It is not clear who will provide leadership.

The only British value that decribes us is 'muddling through'. That worked in a homogenous society, albeit one marked by class strife, but I am not sure it will work in a multi-cultural society.

However, as an English non-entity unable to really read the tea leaves, I can only base hope on being wrong.

H2OHane's avatar

What is a "radical interpretation of Catholicism?"

I suspect it is the same catholicism that was practiced from 33AD-1965.

Will Liley's avatar

Yes. Cecilia’s article is all of a piece with the radical catholic intellectualism coming out of the University of Notre Dame but which also manifests in extreme conservatism with Bannon and the Catholics on the USSC - Alito; Kavanaugh, et al.

H2OHane's avatar

Notre Dame is hardly a bastion of Catholicism. The only Supreme Court justice that holds to pre-Vatican II Catholicism (aka actual Catholicism) is Clarence Thomas. I cannot comment on Bannon, I simply don’t know what to believe about him and haven’t spent anytime on it. Don’t know if I will. The USCCB is full of Modernists (Modernism is a heresy plaguing the world, Catholic and non-Catholic alike).

Catholicism built the West. Introduced universities, charitable hospitals, law, rights (Magna Carta, etc), and justice.

Since Vatican II, in 1965, it has rapidly eroded all through the West. Until the church gets healthy, it will continue to get worse. The church, like its head (Christ) is going through its Passion. It will rise again.

Everyone knows things started going down hill in society in the 60s. As the church goes, so goes the world.

But there was indeed international support for Germany's troubles in the 30s - most obviously in the form of communist agitation, but also through irredentist movements.

Germany also was never (and to some degree still isn't) homogenous as there were huge cultural and linguistic borders through the nation, especially the N/S religious and linguistic divide. Not unlike the distinctions between UK's own home nations.

NatSocToday's avatar

What religious and linguistic divide? You're just making shit up. This comment section is the best evidence of why the “Weimar rot” article is dangerous.

One reader immediately takes the argument exactly where this rhetoric always goes: “barbarians already inside the gates,” “parallel societies,” “homogenous society,” “First Nation British,” “internal divisions,” and the need for a counter-revolutionary political elite.

That is the function of the article.

It does not simply discuss Weimar history. It gives modern reactionaries a historical permission structure: society is rotting, outsiders are inside the gates, pluralism has failed, minorities and migrants are destabilising the nation, liberal democracy is too weak, and only a hard political correction can save civilisation.

That is why the language of “degeneracy” matters.

Once you teach people that fascism was a reaction to cultural rot, they do not stop at 1930s Berlin. They apply the same frame to the present: migrants become “barbarians,” multiculturalism becomes “parallel society,” democracy becomes weakness, and authoritarian politics becomes “necessary.”

This is not an accidental misunderstanding of the article.

It is the article doing exactly what this kind of article is built to do.

Stout Yeoman's avatar

It is a question of fact whether barbarians are here. Read what happened to vulnerable girls in Rotherham and elsewhere. It was barbaric and the perpetrators are properly called barbarians.

Talk to Jews about whether the nation is being destabalised. See the marches of smnetines 200,000 racist antisemites in London. Look at sectarian voting that produces Islamist supremacists in Parliament and loca; councils. Look at the numner of councils that open with prayers in Urdu not English. This is cultural rot.

It is not this article which is dangerous but the denial of reality.

Gross, Nazi apologist bs. Highly emotive language used to push a personal opinion on “degeneracy,” conflating real horrors (the prostitution of youth) with progressive freedom for those repressed by more christian conservative societies (women, gay and bi people, transexuals etc.). The only honesty in this twisting of the truth was the brief mention about economic hardships of the time - the true driver of all the prostitution; prostitution being the only source of income for many in an impoverished, post-war nation.

Today, also, the rise of OnlyFans is not a result of progressive freedom of expression, but a consequence of a late-stage capitalist system that has the majority of its citizens struggling to even afford the bare essentials. In a system where honest work is not enough, other options are going to be explored.

Do you honestly believe book-burning literature on sexuality and rounding up all the LGBTQI+ folks will solve your issue? Because it seems like what you're calling for with this article is a fascist, totalitarian solution to what? People living their lives in a manner different to the rigid Christian conservative blueprint you feel should be forcefully applied to everyone, regardless of their cultural or sexual differences?

The downfall of current society is not a result of this boogeyman of christian moral outrage, but of the erosion of the public institutions and systems that keep us thriving and equal. It is when people are made desperate that they lose their dignity and engage in more degenerate behaviour. And it is not helpful to anyone to conflate genuine sexual and lifestyle differences with that degeneracy.

Let people live, and help them to thrive. Don't repress them into your mould for what you think they should be. That is fascism.

Nick's avatar

“The Nazi backlash, while historically understandable” is a sentence that should rarely if ever be used, and certainly not in this context. If it is in any way “understandable” - by which I mean explainable, not justified (as the author suggests) - it is that, after being forced to suffer crippling reparations and utter humiliation leading to widespread inflation and poverty after WW1, the people fell for the lies of a tyrant/demogague/pervert (in the psychoanalytic sense). These people have always existed and managed to claw their ways into positions of power, and we have long had theoretical models for how to spot and understand them, going back to Plato and the Dionysae of Syracuse. The average Berliner was not “online” enough and had bigger material things to worry about than the sex clinics Wilhelm Reich set up to provide mental health care to prostitutes, though the Nazis were happy to turn people like him into scapegoats, much like the author.

Ozzy Mandingo's avatar

Thank you Nick. Throughout the original piece we’re responding to there’s the unmistakable whiff of “of course Nazism took hold…would you look at this degeneracy!!!”. It’s the same excuse-making reductive bullshit as the humiliation of Versailles leading the Fatherland inevitably into a fascist, genocidal debauch.

Utter horseshit. Within this same piece are allusions to Germany’s veneration of family and the hearth of home and good god…stop it already. Let’s forget Germany’s actual war guilt in WWI (w/ the Schlieffer Plan) and a real fucking depravity that led to some serious porn in the trenches. I’d argue a slightly more pernicious porn than the scene in interwar Berlin (certainly not condoning pedophilia…I’ll leave that to Megyn Kelly and others of her ilk) existed first. All of which was born of those good old fashioned “German” values (only a goddamn country from 1870 I’ll remind everyone). If this extreme form of man-worship, militarism, and all the REAL rot led to not only Germany’s fervor for war but a resulting backlash in an exploding expression of human freedom and even to an excess…why would it not be given the honor of prime mover?

No. A thousand times no. Germany’s descent into Nazism occurred through a multiplicity of factors but in the main was a byproduct of the worldwide global economic downturn stemming from the 1929 American stock market crash which saw the loans to Germany get called en masse which begat a sudden reversal in Germany’s recovery from her war debt (she actually paid only a fraction of the reparations levied). That’s first. Secondly, the Weimar government was a weak construction and riddled with flaws. Notably, the allowance of Presidential decrees to break and reform governments in the final analysis gave Hindenburg the ability to hand the chancellorship to Herr Hitler and through the agency of a conservative cabal (Papen, Hugenberg, etc.) and industrial powers (Thyssen, Schroeder, etc). Support for the NSDAP was actually waning in late 1932 before these forces stepped in.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Go f’ing read some of it (some of you) people. It’s instructive.

Impressive. Weimar Germany is a perfect case study of the collapse of a hollowed-out and rotten society, and oddly enough, in the decade of the Twenties, antisemitism was rampant in France while Germany was comparatively liberal in that regard. Before the Weimar collapse the German Jews were treated like anybody else.

Nice Up The Land Food Forests's avatar

Very important point thanks for bringing that up. Antisemitism was the way pretty much all non Jews felt over the course of thousands of years of experiencing heinous disgusting Jewish behavior and atrocious 100% Jewish conspiracies, but it's true that before Weimar the fucking Jews were doing better in Germany than they had ever done done anywhere in history. They were getting rich. A lot of this was due to or a part of, the WANDERVOGEL Movement, where the German youth in the late 1800's had figured out many of the good parts of the whole hippie thing of hiking in the mountains together, singing songs around the campfire, and even summadat free love. Julie Andrews played a classic Wandervogeler in the sound of music... I know a lot about this stuff. In the middle ages Jews were blamed for the plague all across europe, probably for good reason

(hahaha) But it was in Germany that they were punished most severely. They'd round up all the Jews in an area and build a special building to stuff them all into lock the doors and burn it down. I studied this at length and came to the conclusion that it was related to the heavy meat diet and the extremely short and stern German childhood, but blah blah blah the important thing is that those JEWS GOT RICH in the progressive tolerant pre weimar Germany and then- you have to understand all the covert activity like Woodrow Wilson, who was a victim of 100%jewish political sex blackmail, and his role in the balfour declaration, and the treacherous, traitorous German Jewish financing of germanys enemies. Oi veh I doubt anybody will get any of this. Nobody cares. They just believe in the deluge of Jewish lies until the truth seems whacky. Hahaha https://www.realjewnews.com/?p=537

My point above is that people vote for someone promising them an easy answer. Especially young idealists. With hindsight we say "how could the German people have elected Hitler?" and you assume that no-one would ever do that again, but they do. Regularly and often. The Nazis were seen as modern, not going back to the harsh old ways before the war, but maybe not as extreme as the ultra-Marxist hedonism of the Weimar period. Both Mussolini and Hitler were socialists, but with a corporatist edge. Mussolini used quangos extensively: he used private business to soften state power. The iron fist in a silk glove. It was about optics.

We look back and see fascism and Nazism as "extreme", but compared to the excesses of the Weimar Republic, to Italians and Germans in the late 1920s ane early 1930s, these guys were offerring a more moderate offerring. Clothing his "Corporate Socialism" in symbols of Ancient Rome (the fasces) was PR on the part of Mussolini. It was "Make Italy great again", but using his new, modern way of doing things. These days we get hung up on the WHAT of the word "fascism" rather than understanding the WHY.

Wow. After teaching AP European history for decades, your essay appears to be the perfect example of myopic writing. The Weimar period was a RESULT of the economic chaos and retributive conditions created by the Allied powers.

Your essay also brims with an undercoat of Nazi apologia, and that is inexcusable. The inferences that people expressing different views of gender is the root cause of the worst results of that horrible period of history is inaccurate at least, and straight up trolling with a veneer of intellectualism otherwise.

You touch on aspects of Weimar culture that were far more important to its ultimate failure than its views on sexuality and gender. No one I know places anything other than moral repugnance upon practices of the sexual exploitation of minors. That, as you pointed out, was a response to non-Germans going to Germany where they knew such desperation existed that they could find that perversion, but the very real conditions of what drove those horrible things rests with the demand side of the formula. People were starving to death. And people who are dying from want will do just about anything to survive.

To translate this into today’s terms, which seems to be the point of this in a singularly unobjective manner, would lead me to wondering how you square this with our American culture where, just like then, privileged men in power are the primary source of child abuse and prostitution, trafficking, indeed including the entire list of powerful men in political and economic circles now emerging in the Epstein files. You are transposing cause and effect, and the number of fallacies present here are fairly mind-numbing to anyone who has done more work in the field over many years. Dog whistling for Nazis is a terrible misuse of historical inquiry. It is lurid, and as such will attract those who need psychological confirmation of their own issues with people who are different. It is the same fallacy employed by the Nazis, that the actions of a few define the whole class, and for that, you have done nothing but echo centuries old patterns of discrimination rooted in a warped religious view that purports to be moral, but ignores the same impulses and moral reasoning that also put a pedophile into the White House. The Nazis accomplished their war against the Jews of Europe by doing exactly what you are doing with queer people.

Congratulations. I will use this as an example for my students on how the manipulation of history can be accomplished to further the ends of hatred and bigotry disguised as detailed critique.

Her article looks to have hit a nerve? I’m guessing it’s getting more attention than your AP class gives your hyperbole and offended sensibilities you’re displaying here. You’re a Hirschfeld lover? Nice Choice - Institute for Sexual Science founded by Magnus Hirschfeld on July 6, 1919, in Berlin’s Tiergarten district (initially at In den Zelten 9A-10, later expanded with a neighboring building at Beethovenstraße 3), was the world’s first dedicated sexology research center. Its motto, “Per scientiam ad justitiam” (“Through science to justice”), encapsulated Hirschfeld’s vision: using empirical research, medical practice, and public education to combat prejudice, reform laws, and promote tolerance for sexual and gender diversity. Operating as a private, non-profit foundation until its forced closure in 1933–1934, it embodied the progressive, experimental spirit of Weimar Berlin while serving as a practical clinic, archive, museum, and advocacy hub.

Founding and Context

Hirschfeld (1868–1935), a German-Jewish physician, sexologist, and activist, established the institute after years of private practice treating patients distressed by societal attitudes toward sexuality and gender. Traumatized by suicides among queer patients and influenced by his own experiences (he was gay but did not publicly disclose it), he sought a dedicated space. The institute arose amid Weimar Republic reforms, drawing on bio-medical understandings of sexuality prevalent at the time. It built directly on Hirschfeld’s earlier work, including founding the Scientific-Humanitarian Committee in 1897—the world’s first homosexual rights organization—which campaigned to repeal Paragraph 175 (the law criminalizing male homosexuality).

The institute quickly gained international attention as a pioneering facility. In its first year alone, it handled approximately 18,000 consultations for about 3,500 individuals, many provided free or at low cost to poorer patients. It conducted around 1,250 lectures and offered public education on topics like contraception, venereal diseases, and sexual health. A neighboring building purchased in 1921 expanded its capacity for research, counseling, and public events.

Structure, Staff, and Facilities

More than 40 people worked at the institute across research, clinical care, counseling, and education. Key staff included:

• Magnus Hirschfeld — Director and leading theorist.

• Arthur Kronfeld — Psychiatrist/psychologist.

• Ludwig Levy-Lenz — Gynecologist involved in surgeries.

• Karl Giese — Archivist and Hirschfeld’s long-term partner (Giese later directed aspects of the library).

• Others such as Friedrich Wertheim (dermatologist), Felix Abraham (psychiatrist), Max Hodann (sex educator), and various specialists in endocrinology, radiology, and ethnography.

Facilities comprised medical and psychological examination rooms, a lecture hall, a marriage and sex counseling office, and living quarters (some staff, including Hirschfeld and Giese, resided on-site). It housed offices for affiliated organizations like the Scientific-Humanitarian Committee and the World League for Sexual Reform (which Hirschfeld helped lead, presiding over its 1929 congress).

A standout feature was its museum of sexual science—likely the world’s only one at the time—which displayed ethnographic artifacts, contraceptives, sex toys, paintings, ancient phallic objects, and items related to fetishism, sadomasochism, and sexual diversity. This collection, alongside a massive library and archive, served both research and public education purposes, attracting visitors ranging from scientists and politicians to cultural figures like Christopher Isherwood, André Gide, and Margaret Sanger. Tours and lectures helped normalize discussions of sexuality.

Library, Archive, and Research

The institute amassed one of the world’s largest collections on sexuality: an estimated 10,000–25,000 books, journals, medical diagrams, photographs, patient questionnaires, intersex case studies, and examples of erotica and art. It included rare historical works, protocols for medical procedures, and extensive data from Hirschfeld’s long-running psycho-biological questionnaires on homosexuality and gender variance (methods later influencing Alfred Kinsey).

Research spanned sexual biology, pathology, sociology, and ethnography. Hirschfeld’s core theory of “sexual intermediacy” or “sexual transitions” posited human traits on a spectrum between masculine and feminine poles (encompassing sex organs, physical characteristics, drive, and psychology). This framework viewed homosexuality, transgender identities, intersex conditions, and cross-dressing as natural variations rather than pathologies or moral failings. The institute opposed conversion efforts for orientation and advocated understanding over cure. It also explored eugenics-influenced ideas (e.g., counseling on reproduction for certain conditions) but rejected racial hierarchies.

Public outreach included pamphlets (one on contraception reached 100,000 copies), film screenings (e.g., Different from the Others, co-written by Hirschfeld in 1920), and expert reports for courts or police.

Medical Services and Transgender Care

The institute provided comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services: treatment for venereal diseases, impotence, alcoholism, gynecological issues, and access to contraception (especially for the poor). It ran a dedicated Center for Sexual Counseling for Married Couples and an Eugenics Department for Mother and Child.

Its most groundbreaking work involved care for gender-nonconforming individuals. Hirschfeld coined “transvestite” (1910) for cross-dressers and “transsexual” (in a 1923 essay). The institute issued “transvestite certificates” or passes in cooperation with Berlin police, protecting individuals from arrest for wearing clothing associated with the opposite sex.

Gender-affirming care represented an early form of what is now called transgender medicine:

• Hormone therapy: Feminizing treatments (e.g., estrogen) for trans women to promote breast growth and softer features. (Testosterone synthesis came later, so masculinizing options were limited.)

• Surgeries: By 1930–1931, the institute performed some of the earliest modern male-to-female gender-affirming surgeries, termed Genitalumwandlung (“genital transformation”). These occurred in stages: castration, penectomy, and vaginoplasty. The team included gynecologist Ludwig Levy-Lenz and surgeon Erwin Gohrbandt. Hirschfeld initially cautioned against surgery due to risks but supported it when patients faced severe distress or suicide risk, viewing it as alignment with their innate nature.

• Examples: Dora Richter (surgeries starting ~1922, completed 1931); Lili Elbe (multiple procedures in 1930–1931, who died from complications); Gerd Katter (double mastectomy in 1926 at age 16 after a self-attempt). Some post-surgery trans women worked at the institute as receptionists or maids amid employment discrimination. Female-to-male phalloplasty was not performed there (emerging later elsewhere).

The institute emphasized psychological support alongside medical interventions and documented cases extensively for research. It treated gender variance as a form of natural human diversity, not illness.

Services also aided homosexuals (e.g., community connections, adaptation counseling without pathologizing), intersex individuals (expert reports, advocacy for informed sex assignment), and broader reproductive health.

Destruction in 1933

The institute faced escalating attacks from conservative and anti-Semitic critics in the 1920s, including physical assaults on Hirschfeld. After the Nazis seized power in January 1933, it became an immediate target as a symbol of “degenerate” Weimar culture, Jewish influence, and moral decay.

On May 6, 1933, members of the German Student Union (Nazi-supporting youth) and SA (stormtroopers) raided the building. They ransacked offices, looted the library, archive, patient records, artifacts, and clinical files. Materials were loaded onto trucks; some burned on-site, others transported away. Four days later, on May 10, thousands of the institute’s books and documents fueled one of the regime’s notorious public book burnings in Berlin’s Opernplatz (Bebelplatz), where Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels addressed crowds. A bronze bust of Hirschfeld was paraded and thrown onto the fire. Patient name/address lists allegedly aided later persecutions under Paragraph 175. The buildings were seized; the institute was formally closed. Hirschfeld, on a lecture tour abroad (he had left Germany earlier, saying “If Germany doesn’t want me, I don’t want it either”), witnessed newsreel footage of the burning in a Paris cinema. He attempted a successor institute in France but died of a heart attack in Nice on May 14, 1935.

Aftermath, Legacy, and Nuances

Most materials were lost, though scattered remnants survived in private collections or abroad (some valuable books were sold rather than burned). Staff fates varied: exiles (e.g., Levy-Lenz), suicides, concentration camp deaths, or rare collaborations. The site was later bombed and demolished.

Hirschfeld’s work influenced later figures like Harry Benjamin (transsexuality research) and Kinsey (questionnaire methods), shaping 20th-Modern scholars view the institute as a landmark in recognizing sexual and gender diversity, though some critique its eugenics leanings or binary-spectrum model by today’s standards. It provided real refuge and care—often lifesaving—for marginalized people in a hostile era, while advancing public discourse.

The 1933 raid symbolized the Nazis’ broader assault on liberalism, science, and pluralism, directly tying into their fury over Weimar’s perceived sexual “depravity.” Today, the episode underscores tensions between cultural openness and backlash, as well as the fragility of progressive institutions under authoritarianism.

You say before 1914 Germany "was a society defined by structure, piety, and an organic connection to history. It was a nation grounded in Christian sexual ethics, where the family was revered as the inviolable bedrock of the state, and where duty, honour, and natural law governed public life."

This is an awfully rosy view of a country explicitly based (in the idea of Kulturkampf) on attacking and destroying Catholicism, i.e. Christianity in its pure form. There was certainly a rot in Germany in the 1920s, but it began back in the 1520s.

And it's not true anyway. The nazis campaigned on Arbeit und Brot (work and bread) - i.e. addressing high unemployment and widespread hunger. They promised to make men feel proud again by providing them with jobs so they could put food and the table and support their families.

Nothing to do with cabarets.

George's avatar

Ahhh actually yes, something to do with cabarets - it was more than work and bread.

It’s easy to check this stuff out- ai is adept at tasks, searching, presenting results and summarizing the data

Yes, there is overwhelming historical evidence that the Nazi Party (NSDAP) was deeply enraged by—and ideologically and politically opposed to—the perceived liberalism, sexual permissiveness, and cultural “depravity” of Weimar Berlin in the 1920s and early 1930s. This opposition was not peripheral but central to their worldview, propaganda, and early governing actions. They framed Weimar Berlin’s vibrant, experimental scene as a symptom of national decay (“Entartung” or degeneracy), often blaming it on Jewish influence, Bolshevism, liberalism, and the “November criminals” who signed the Treaty of Versailles. This stance helped rally conservative, middle-class, and rural support by positioning the Nazis as moral purifiers restoring traditional German values, family, racial purity, and order.

To explore this thoroughly, I’ll break it down with context, primary evidence, specific examples, nuances, and broader implications. The response draws on well-documented historical sources, including Nazi writings, contemporary actions, and scholarly consensus.

1. Historical Context: Weimar Berlin as a Symbol of “Decadence”

The Weimar Republic (1919–1933) emerged from Germany’s defeat in World War I amid economic turmoil (hyperinflation in 1923, the Great Depression after 1929). Berlin became Europe’s most notoriously liberal cultural capital—a hub of cabarets, jazz, avant-garde art, the “New Woman” (emancipated, androgynous, working, and sexually independent), prostitution, pornography, and open queer subcultures. Homosexuality was technically illegal under Paragraph 175 of the penal code, but enforcement was lax in Berlin, allowing a thriving gay and lesbian scene with dozens of bars, clubs (e.g., the Eldorado nightclub, frequented by cross-dressers and trans people), magazines, and theater. British writer Christopher Isherwood famously captured it as “Berlin meant boys.”

Pioneering sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld (a Jewish physician) founded the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft (Institute for Sexual Science) in 1919 in Berlin. It conducted groundbreaking research on homosexuality (arguing it was natural, not criminal), transgender issues (including early gender-affirming surgeries), and sexual reform. The institute housed a massive library, archives, and clinic, and advocated decriminalization and education. This environment shocked conservative Germans, who saw it as moral collapse: rising venereal disease, “masculinization” of women, pornography, and a breakdown of traditional gender roles. Conservative critics, nationalists, and religious leaders decried it as “Verwilderung” (wilding or untamed degeneracy) symbolizing national emasculation after Versailles.

The Nazis weaponized this perception. They did not invent the backlash—it built on pre-existing fears—but amplified it ruthlessly as part of their “Kampf” (struggle) against the Weimar system.

2. Nazi Rhetoric and Ideology: “Cultural Poisoning” and Moral Decay

Nazi leaders explicitly railed against Weimar’s liberalism and sexual openness as existential threats to the German Volk (people/race). This was tied to their core ideology of racial hygiene, anti-Semitism, and anti-modernism.

• Adolf Hitler in Mein Kampf (1925): Written while imprisoned after the failed Beer Hall Putsch, the book repeatedly laments Germany’s “cultural decay” and “retrogression.” Hitler describes Weimar as riddled with “germs” of corruption: “Everywhere we find the presence of those germs which give rise to protuberant growths that must sooner or later bring about the ruin of our culture.” He mocks how “morality and ethics [were] represented as outmoded,” “religion is ridiculed,” and “natural feeling” overthrown in favor of “base nature.” He links this to Jewish “poisoning” of art, theater, literature, and public life, portraying it as deliberate racial subversion. Berlin exemplified the “half-measure” and “inner decay” he despised.

• Joseph Goebbels and propaganda: As a rising Nazi, Goebbels (Berlin Gauleiter from 1926) denounced Hirschfeld as a promoter of “degeneracy” and the institute as backed by Social Democrats. Nazi newspapers like Der Stürmer accused Hirschfeld of “grooming” youth. Broader propaganda equated Weimar’s cabarets, jazz (“Negermusik”), abstract art, and queer visibility with “cultural Bolshevism” (Kulturbolschewismus)—a Jewish-Bolshevik plot to weaken Germany. Historians note that the Nazis’ self-image as restorers of “public morality” was a key factor in their electoral gains among conservatives alarmed by 1920s excesses.

This was not abstract rage; it was visceral and tied to their vision of an Aryan utopia emphasizing Kinder, Küche, Kirche (children, kitchen, church) for women and martial masculinity for men.

3. Concrete Actions: Immediate Crackdowns in 1933

Once in power (Hitler appointed Chancellor January 30, 1933), the Nazis moved swiftly against Berlin’s liberal scene—evidence of genuine fury, not mere rhetoric.

• February–March 1933: Berlin police (under Nazi orders) closed dozens of gay bars and clubs, including the iconic Eldorado. Gay and lesbian venues across Germany were shuttered.

• May 6, 1933: Nazi students and SA (Sturmabteilung) stormtroopers raided and looted Hirschfeld’s institute. They seized 20,000+ books, journals, artworks, and patient records on sexuality and gender. Hirschfeld (in exile) watched newsreels of the destruction in horror. Four days later (May 10), the materials were publicly burned in Berlin’s Opernplatz alongside other “un-German” books—part of nationwide bonfires orchestrated by Goebbels. This was one of the earliest and largest symbolic acts of the regime.

• Ongoing persecution: Paragraph 175 was enforced with new brutality (later expanded). An estimated 100,000 men were arrested for homosexuality; thousands sent to concentration camps (marked with pink triangles), where many died. “Degenerate art” exhibits (1937) and music bans targeted modernist works associated with Weimar. Cabarets, prostitution rings, and avant-garde culture were suppressed.

These were not isolated; they launched the broader “purification” that included the 1937 Degenerate Art show and euthanasia programs.

4. Nuances, Complexities, and Edge Cases

While the evidence is clear, history is rarely black-and-white:

• Political utility vs. pure ideology: The Nazis exaggerated Weimar “depravity” for propaganda to appeal to middle-class fears of moral and economic collapse. It was effective—fears of “sexual dissolution” boosted support for authoritarianism in the early 1930s. But it intersected with anti-Semitism: Hirschfeld was Jewish, and many cabaret figures were too.

• Internal hypocrisy: Ernst Röhm, SA chief and early Nazi, was openly homosexual (or bisexual) and defended male bonding in a coded way. The SA tolerated some queer elements for its rough street-fighting culture. However, after Röhm’s power grew threatening, Hitler used homosexuality as a pretext for the Night of the Long Knives purge (June 30–July 2, 1934), murdering Röhm and hundreds of SA leaders. This eliminated rivals while “cleansing” the party. Some early Nazis had modernist leanings (Goebbels briefly defended experimental art), but Hitler overruled them.

• Selective enforcement: Lesbians faced less systematic targeting than gay men (viewed as a greater “threat” to reproduction/military). Prostitution was curtailed but not eradicated. Not every conservative supported the Nazis solely for moral reasons—economics and nationalism mattered more to many. Some accounts note Weimar’s scene was more visible in Berlin than nationwide and partly mythic (exaggerated by tourists and later Cabaret).

• Broader “degeneracy”: Sexual issues were part of a larger purge of modernism, including “degenerate music” (jazz), art, and literature. It was never just about sex but about any challenge to racial/national hierarchy.

5. Implications and Legacy

This “enragement” was foundational to Nazism: it justified the destruction of democratic pluralism and set precedents for the Holocaust. LGBTQ+ people were among the first targeted groups (though not on the scale of Jews or Roma). Post-1945, Paragraph 175 remained in West Germany until 1969–1994 reforms. The episode underscores how cultural backlash can fuel authoritarianism—Weimar’s freedoms provoked a violent counter-reaction.

In summary, the Nazis were not only enraged but acted on it immediately and systematically. Primary sources (Mein Kampf, propaganda, raid records) and actions (burnings, closures, camps) leave no serious doubt. Historians across perspectives—from Richard J. Evans to Laurie Marhoefer—confirm this as a core driver of their ideology and rise. For deeper reading, consult Sex and the Weimar Republic (Marhoefer) or US Holocaust Memorial Museum archives. This history remains relevant for understanding how societies respond to cultural change.

Among the Nazis many influences were that of Islamists under Sharia Law, going back previous centuries and the writings of Martin Luther calling out the alleged corruption in the Catholic Church, that led to the later equally damaging writings of Karl Marx, Fredrick Engles, Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung and Magnus Hirchsfeld would never have dared to come into being, because the Reformation, Enlightenment, nor the events of later centuries would never have taken place as an indirect historical consequence - frankly, much of what has happened over the centuries and including in our times could have been prevented if the Crusades and the Inqusition had never been ended and had been maintained, if the Knights Templar and the Knights of Christ had remained in their positions as effective and elite, all powerful milltary fighting forces for the defence and protection of Christians in Christian nations and for the enforcement of Christian teachings via a show of Milltary force, all of which must be restarted in our current times - when we look at Islamic countries where Islamic Sharia law is enforced, we see how this could be adapted in our times to enforce Christian Teachings in Christian nations, where this is utterly vital for the continued existence and survival of western Christian civilisation in western Christian nations
